What is a Family Photography Session?

A Sunset Family Photography Session is the perfect way to document your family’s growth year after year.

All Family sessions take place 1-2 hours before sunset. This gives your photos the beautiful dreamy light that you see across my work. I know that this may be later than some little ones usual bed times, but believe me, one night is so worth it! Start times will change depending on the season, so if an earlier time is required, be sure to book earlier in the season.

I have my favourite usual locations for family sessions, but I am always open to new suggestions and opportunities. Want an urban ice-cream date along the boardwalk? What kind of ice cream would you like? Want a fun beach session with a steamy sidebar in the waves? Let me apply my sunscreen. Want to traipse through the trees, sit in the wildflowers, have a tickle session in the long grasses? I’ll bring the bug spray. Have a farm and want to incorporate your animals? I get to pet the friendly ones right?

We’ll start your Family Photography journey with a Consultation either in my studio or by video chat where we’ll go over every single detail of your session. Together, we’ll choose the perfect location and date, along with a weather date. We’ll go over different posing, how the session will flow, where we’ll start, and where we’ll finish. We’ll look at colour schemes, outfit inspiration, the Client Closet, and I’ll even help you pick the best outfits. We’ll talk about your hopes for the session, and what the outcome will be. Amazing photos, obviously. This will be the perfect time for me to meet your family, especially young children. I’ll ask your kiddos some questions, and get an idea of their personalities to best help me photograph each and every member of the family honestly.

Next comes the actual session. We all know this can be a stressful event, but my goal is to make it a fun and relaxed experience. We’ll start with the typical ‘Christmas Card’ pose, with everyone looking at the camera and smiling. From there, we’ll move onto some fun candid photos of the whole family. We’ll incorporate a mixture of games, movement, laughter and connection to get a variety of photos. Next we’ll break off and do some sibling photos. From there, I’ll photograph each individual child solo. These are amazing personality photos perfect for a gallery wall. From there, the kids can have a break, and it’s your turn! We’ll end the session with some parent photos. Just in time for the sun to sink beyond the horizon.

If you choose an ordering appointment, you’ll come back into the studio 2-3 weeks later to view your digital images, as well as place any product orders. I’ll show you how your artwork will look on the walls of your actual home, and we’ll go over all product options. After your choices are made, you’ll get an instant download to your digital gallery. If you choose a digital gallery, you’ll receive that in place of an appointment, and you can download and print as you see fit!
